REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Per the NOR, the ALIR mandates that competitors adhere to U.S. Sailing’s Safety Equipment Requirements (SER) for Coastal racing, available here. The organizing authority encourages sailors to hone their seamanship and safety skills just as they do their sailing skills. Below are additional safety resources for skippers and crew to consider before sailing in the ALIR. For those interested in sailing in longer offshore races like the Newport-Bermuda Race, Safety-at-Sea training is required.

CPR and First Aid Training - Anything can happen offshore requiring immediate medical attention. Being prepared is the best way to stay safe offshore. Knowledge of CPR and first aid are important components of a holistic approach to injury prevention and offshore safety. The Red Cross has numerous course options in many locations to get sailors important hands-on training.

Regatta Rescue - Great resource for offshore medical training and medical kits. Link here. If you’re looking to venture beyond Adventure Medical Kits for a more serious medical kit option, Regatta Rescue is a premium resource used by many offshore sailors, including Cole Brauer (first American woman to race solo around the world) and David Southwell (winner of the 2024 OSTAR Race). Alternatively, if you’re interested in building your own offshore medical inventory, ask our Skippers Representative about the kit he built.

Landfall Navigation - Local purveyor of safety equipment, including flares (including USCG-approved electronic flares), life rafts, medical kits, and other safety equipment, among other kit necessary to make any offshore race fun and safe. Link here.
